Somehow Brax and Isaac assured Hunt I was fine enough so he would go back to work given this wasn’t even his case. There would be crossover now that it was in Chicago, but the dead were in Seattle, so that would make the murder investigations theirs.

I fully understood that and that my partner couldn’t ditch work anytime I was upset.

But I was really, really upset and wanted him with me. I’d lied through my teeth though and told him it was okay. He could see me at lunch or whatever. He only left after Brax promised he would not leave my side.

We were in one of the lounge rooms of the coven house and had been for the past hour or so. There were about a million things to do, and I knew a lot of people needed to talk to me and had valid questions about what happened this morning. I understood all of that.

None of it mattered until I heard from Gabriel and Michelle since they’d gone to look for my mother’s soul.

“Why is it taking so long?” I asked Brax again. “Seriously, it’s not like you have to cross an actual river to get there like in books, right?”

“It’s going to be okay. No matter the answer, we will figure this out.”

I didn’t feel like that, but I didn’t have the energy to be my normal snarky self. Gabriel and Michelle appeared, and I sprang to stand, but my legs were like gelatin, and I would have gone right back down if Brax hadn’t caught me. Gabriel was as blank as normal, but I swallowed a whimper when Michelle actually gave me a look of pity.

“She was in Hades or Hell or whatever the fuck it is?” I asked, sounding a bit hysterical to my own ears.

“Yes,” Gabriel answered, bluntly. “We rescued her once we saw her soul was pure. Your father—”

“Wait, I’m sorry, give me a minute,” I whispered as I went to sit back down.

Brax did with me, sitting me between his legs really which only worked because the couch was deep. It probably wasn’t conformable for him, but I appreciated him trying to comfort me.

I stared at my hands, spots forming and leaving but my hands also being blurry. Brax gave me a slight shake and spoke about shock. I nodded I heard him at least and then felt like I was in my head a bit.

“My father did it?”

“Yes,” Gabriel answered.

“So he’s there?”

“Oh yes,” Michelle chuckled and then cleared her throat. “Sorry.”

I snorted. “That’s the best fucking news I’ve heard in a long time so yeah, I—it’s fine. He’s a monster.” I let out a slow breath. “How long did she suffer down there because I didn’t—because I wasn’t strong enough to ask for answers?”

“Hey, that doesn’t matter,” Brax cut in. “You weren’t sitting around doing nothing, Soraya. You were attacked, months taken from you. We’ve had—none of this is your fault. I’m sorry you didn’t think you could ask me this.”

“You wanted to be separate from all of that with me,” I rasped.
